The friction material for the drum brake is carried by the brake shoes, similar to how brake pads are for brake discs. The brake shoe is forced against the interior of the brake drum, which is where friction is produced, when the brake is applied.
The geometry of the entire structure, the mounting bores on one side, and the brake shoe roller on the other need brake shoes to be constructed with extreme precision.
Hardening is required to make the mounting bores and brake shoe roller wear-resistant. The friction lining is riveted to the brake shoe and can be replaced separately without having to replace the entire brake shoe.
