By measuring the pressure in the inlet manifold, the Manifold Absolute Pressure Sensor (MAP sensor) provides the engine's electronic control unit with real-time information about the manifold pressure. Calculating air density and determining the engine's air mass flow rate are done using the data from the MAP sensor.
This sensor measures throttle and turbo performance and can also be used to detect unmetered air leaks in the inlet manifold. The data it collects can be used for diagnostics.
