The play in the drum braking mechanism is adjusted using slack adjusters. To create the necessary friction against the braking drum in a drum brake, brake linings are used. The brake linings are liable to deterioration. The slack adjuster has the duty of adjusting the play between the brake lining and the brake drum as soon as the wear rises.
It is crucial to have a correctly set braking system since losing control can happen if the brake pressure applied to the wheels is uneven.
