Engine management systems are controlled and regulated by sensors and the technology that supports them.
A sensor is a device that can gather one or more physical properties, such as temperature, position, movement, speed, etc., and turn them into a signal that can be processed by the ECU electronically.
In order to operate the internal combustion engine for efficiency, economy, and performance, actuators, are parts that translate the electrical output signals from the ECU into physical quantities. This comprises components including electro-pneumatic valves, ignition coils, and fuel injectors. In order to provide the ECU with more control, actuators provide feedback on factors like location, power usage, and load.
