Drum brakes are typically employed in the rear braking system of smaller passenger cars; they can also be used as a parking brake, which can be integrated into a disc brake on some larger vehicles.
By forcing the brake linings against the interior surfaces of the drums, which revolve with the wheel, friction is produced in this arrangement. This revolution slows it down by applying more pressure to the brake shoes as they contact the drum.
Cast iron brake drums are hefty components used in commercial automobiles. When the brake is applied, the brake shoes come into contact with the interior of the brake drum.
