Drum brakes are typically used in the rear braking system of a smaller passenger cars. They also have the ability to act as a parking brake, which can be integrated into a disc brake on some larger vehicles.
This mechanism presses the brake linings against the interior surfaces of the drums, which revolve with the wheel, to create friction. This rotation slows it down because more force is applied to the brake shoes when they come into contact with the drum.
Heavy cast iron brake drums are a common component of commercial vehciles. As soon as the brake is applied, the brake shoes come into contact with the interior of the brake drum.
