Pneumatic brakes are standard on commercial vehicles that weigh more than 7.5 tons gross. The brake cylinder receives compressed air when the vehicle brakes. It forces a piston to move, which in turn forces a diaphragm.
The brake system is operated by the piston. Drum brakes and disc brakes both use pneumatic brake cylinders. The brake cylinders need to be inspected frequently because of their critical function in braking.
Corrosion and diaphragm leaks are the primary causes of damage. Replacement of the brake cylinder is necessary if there is any uncertainty as to its correct operation.
