Nearly all automobiles have radiator fans that are electronically controlled. When necessary, they are crucial in regulating cooling airflow.
Typically, they are made up of an electric motor that the engine control unit regulates as needed. Fan couplings are an additional option that is present in older automobiles.
They are composed of two discs with liquid placed between them (silicone oil). The fan blades are attached to one disc, which is driven by the engine. A bimetallic spring makes sure that, if cooling is necessary, the liquid between the discs is transported via adhesion to the opposite disc.
