Adjusting the play in the drum brake mechanism is done using slack adjusters. The necessary friction against the brake drum is produced by a drum brake using brake linings. Wear can occur to the brake linings. The slack adjuster's job is to change the amount of play between the braking drum and the lining as soon as wear becomes more noticeable.
