In supercharged combustion engines, intercoolers (also known as air coolers) cool compressed air before it is delivered to the engine. Lowering the air's temperature improves its density, which increases the amount of oxygen and fuel available for combustion, improving engine efficiency (increase in power).
With an aluminum core and aluminum or plastic tanks, the most common air cooler design is similar to that of a radiator. Normally, the ME4220 Intercooler is located between the engine and the supercharger.
