For the cooling of the vehicle, the Fan coupling is crucial. There are still Fan clutches in older automobiles that are not electronically controlled.
They are made up of two discs with a liquid between them (silicone oil). The engine powers one disc, while the fan blades power the other. A bimetallic spring makes sure that the liquid between the discs is transferred via adhesion to the opposite disc if cooling is necessary.
An electrically controlled fan coupling is the most recent variant. The architecture is identical, but the engine control unit's fine regulation takes the place of the bimetallic spring's rough regulation. Fuel is saved, and the environment is improved.
