Drum brakes are frequently used in the rear braking system of smaller passenger cars. They also have the capacity to function as a parking brake, whcih can be paired with a disc brake on some larger vehicles.
The brake linings are pressed up against the interior surfaces of the drums, which revolve with the wheel, in this method to create friction. This rotation causes the brake shoes to be forces harder on the drum, slowing it down.
Commercial vehicle brake drums are substantial cast iron components. When the brake is applied, the brake shoes come into contact with the brake drum's inside.
