Pneumatic brake systems are standard on commercial vehicles with a gross weight of above 7.5 t. Pressurized air enters the brake cylinder during braking. It pushes a piston, which in turn pushes a diaphragm.
The brake mechanism is activated by the piston. Both disc brakes and drum brakes use pneumatic brake cylinders. The brake cylinders must undergo routine inspections due to their crucial function in braking.
Corrosion and a leaking diaphragm are the main causes of damage. The brake cylinder should be replaced if there is any uncertainty as to its correct operation.
