Nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions from the engine's exhaust are minimized via the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) system.
EGR valves often come in two varieties. One employs an electropneumatic pressure transducer that is vacuum operated and is opened and closed by the ECU. The other is run by a stepper motor or DC electric motor. Depending on engine load, both vacuum and electronic kinds open and close.
