The drum brake mechanism's play must be adjusted using slack adjusters. Brake linings are used in drum brakes to create the necessary friction against the brake drum. The brake linings can become worn out. The slack adjuster's job is to change the amount of play between the brake lining and the brake drum as soon as the wear level rises.
